This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to technologies that may function as alterantives to learning/course management systems like Blackboard, Desire-to-Learn, and Sakai. Attend this workshop to gain an understanding of what are the core components of a learning management system (LMS), what technologies might function as alterantives to LMSs, and where you may obtain a  accounts for these alternative LMS technologies.

Outcome

After attending this workshop participants shall be able to:

  • Describe the primary requirements of a Learning Management System.
  • List various technologies that can also function as, or parts of, a LMS.
  • Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of using the following tools as alternative LMSs:
  1. Blogs
  2. Wikis
  3. Web-Based Office Software
  4. Social Networking Site
  • List where they may open free accounts for blogs, wikis, web-based office software, and social networking sites.
  • Describe issues with online testing and list some alternative web sites that offer testing tools.
