Creating Research Assignments that Foster Critical Thinking and Information Literacy

Description

The goals of the event are to make faculty comfortable with and knowledgeable about helping students learn information literacy and critical thinking skills through assigning a research project. In this workshop, participants will be able to: * Outline various aspects of Information literacy skills (how to locate, access, evaluate, and use appropriate resources). * Outline various aspects of critical thinking skills (inference, recognition of assumptions, deduction, interpretation, and evaluation of arguments). * Discuss how and why information literacy skills and critical thinking skills are difficult to teach, learn, and assess * Construct a research project assignment that will benefit students by both teaching them information literacy skills and improving their critical thinking and problem solving skills in the act of locating, accessing, evaluating, and using the resources. * Design and develop research project process assignments and assessments/rubrics that make incorporating a research project into a course a management project for both the instructor and the students.
