INTRODUCTIONS

Faculty spent time introducing themselves, describing the online course they plan to develop and what computer skills/experience they have (including pertinent courses and workshops they have completed).

Danene

Danene will develop an Introduction to Music Theory online course. This course is required of all education majors. One challenge for her is to find software that students can use to write music.   She tried to develop this course several years ago and experiemented with WebCT then, but the technology/software was not available to make it work. Danene has taken Donna Gaudet's CIS 236 - Web-Based Teaching and Learning course and highly recommends it.

Keri

Keri is developing an online version of Principles of Marketing, a course she taught fifteen years ago. She has more experience teaching classes with case studies than she does teaching the introductory course. Keri has basic computer skills.

Lorna

In response to the to high demand for the only library certification program for technicians in the state of Arizona, Lorna will put the Foundation of Libraries and Information Services course online. Lorna has extensive computer experience, including being a web administrator. She found Donna's CIS 236 course to be an "awakening" experience. She especially liked Donna's syllabus and some of the assignments she included in the course.

Bob

Bob is the head athletic trainer at MCC and an adjunct faculty member in exercise science. He took the CIS 236 class from Alan Levine at the district office and thought it to be an incredible experience. Bob will be putting the Healthful Living class online. He has used WebCT in teaching hybrid courses.

Marcia

Marcia, a small business owner and adjunct faculty at two district campuses, will be developing an online Business Procedures course.  In addition to earning an MBA, Marcia has trained as a television teacher in one of her previous lives. Marcia wants to design a course that is very interactive. She likes to use Powerpoint and wants to include interesting sound effects.

Sandra

Sandra is finishing her PhD. in philosophy at ASU, teaching as an adjunct faculty member, and riding herd on a two-year old at home. She is very computer literate. Sandra will be developing an online Medical and Bioethics course. She has used Blackboard for a course-management system at ASU and found it much more intuitive to use than WebCT. Peggy agreed with her assessment, citing WebCT's enhanced features as the reason MCC faculty choose to stay with it.

There are lots of workshops, technical help, and opportunities to schedule one-on-one help with CTL staffers to get you comfortable with WebCT if you choose to use it for your course delivery. For individualized help with WebCT, make an appointment with one of these CTL staffers:

1. Peggy Johnson  johnson@mail.mc.maricopa.edu   phone 480-461-7703

2. Melanie Kroneing melanie.kroening@mcmail.maricopa.edu   phone 480-461-7799

3. Donna Gaudet donna.gaudet@mcmail.maricopa.edu   phone 480-461-7929

J ulia

Julia has taught psychology as an adjunct faculty member for a very long time. She also has a practice as a medical psychologist. Julia had an online developmental psychology course about 3/4 developed several years ago when her son became seriously ill. She stopped course development to be with her son and the course was never completed. Now she is beginning work on an online Abnormal Psychology course.

PLANNING THE SEMESTER

Peg passed out the scheduled activities for the semester (also included on attachment to this message). Faculty were advised that they do not need to attend a session if they already have the skills a particular workshop will address. For example, if you are familiar with WebCT, it is not necessary to attend the WebCT Basics workshop on February 17. However, if you wish to attend, you can work on your WebCT course while the workshop is in progress and have a resource to answer any questions that arise. If you choose not to attend a particular DLMG meeting, use the time to work on your course development.

Special dates to note:

1. Make an appointment to meet with Peggy by March 11 to show your plans for your course.

    2. Be prepared to share your onine course with the group on March 24 at our regular DLMG meeting.

3. Be prepared to show your course to the group on either April 28 or May 5 (see schedule).

Special Note:   Donna Gaudet has agreed to come to our Feb. 10 meeting. After our reunion discussion is completed, she will take us into her CIS 236 course and share some its features for those who are interested. So if possible, plan to stay a little longer at this meeting (if you haven't already taken the CIS 236 course).

HOMEWORK

Faculty are asked to spend time viewing some online courses before our next meeting. Look for a course you want to share (bring the URL and show it to us on screen) on January 27. Identify features of the course that you especially like or do not like.  In the past faculty have been able to gain access to some courses in their discipline by contacting faculty who have developed such courses and requesting guest access. One place to start for a listing of online courses is the University of Texas Worldwide Lecture Hall at http://web.austin.utexas.edu/wlh/
